Marketing is complicated. There are a lot of moving parts. Sometimes, we wish we could just be blunt with the business owners we are trying to help and tell them the cold, hard truth without sounding like rude, demeaning, know-it-alls. So, in an effort to enlighten and not frighten, we give you our new blog series “You’ve Been Schooled!”. We hope it will help business owners understand marketing a little better and make better decisions with their marketing dollars. Today’s topic is SEO and our expert is Christian Myers.
If I could vent about (ahem…educate) business owners on search engine optimization, I would tell them this:
Think of SEO as a Three-Legged Stool
“SEO is a complicated science, but it’s easier to understand if you think of it as a three-legged stool. One leg is technical SEO, another is content/on-site optimizations, and the third leg is backlinks to your website and off-site signals. You usually need all three of these aspects of SEO to be strong in order to rank for keywords that are even modestly competitive.
If your technical SEO is sound (site speed, HTTPS-enabled, no mobile usability errors, etc), you can usually increase your position on the search engine results page by pursuing new backlinks from high-quality sources or by writing new content or improving old content.”

And there you have it. SEO is complicated to start with and because Google is constantly changing its algorithm, it’s even harder to stay on top of. Most small business owners don’t have the time to even master the fundamentals, much less keep up with all of the changes. It’s best to hire an expert to help – either in-house or an outside agency. Otherwise, you may be throwing good money away on ineffective strategies.
We hope this helps you in your quest to grow your business. If you’d like to learn more about SEO strategies, or need help with yours, we’d love to chat!
