Are Online Reviews Bringing Your Business Down?

November 19, 2012

Are you losing customers, revenue, or your business’s strong reputation because of negative online reviews? Within the past couple of years, the influence of online reviews on consumers and their purchasing habits has quickly grown. According to a 2011 Cone trend tracker report, 89% of consumers reference online sources for service or product reviews before making a buying decision. Additionally, four out of five consumers will change their mind about a recommended purchase due to negative information found on the Internet.  So how can you ensure your reputation will not be harmed? Lure Creative has the answers for you!

Make Your Online Presence A Priority

It is easy to push your online efforts to the bottom of your to-do list.  The tasks of making sure your website is performing well in search results, consistently posting relevant content in all of your social networks, and monitoring your reputation online often get forgotten amongst the day to day activities of running a business. However, with these outlets often serving as the first impression for dozens of potential new customers, this is no longer acceptable.  It is time to make your online presence a priority, especially in the area of online reviews. Set aside at least 30 minutes a week and do a quick search to see what people are saying about your company. If you do not have the time to actively and effectively monitor these review sites, consider hiring someone who can.

Be An Active Part of Reviews

When you are monitoring reviews, be an active voice.  Online review sites are powerful customer service tools, that when used correctly can add credibility to your company.  Thank those who share a positive review, express gratitude for both their business and their time.  When it comes to negative reviews, respond appropriately and politely.  Losing your cool online could do lots of damage to your company’s reputation, so it is best to acknowledge the review and direct it to be resolved offline.

Steer Clear of Purchasing Fake Reviews

While it would be nice to have plenty of positive reviews about your company on various review sites, receiving these by paying for them is dishonorable.   Not to mention, review sites are working on ways to crack down on fake reviews and out companies that have purchased them.  This will not only be embarrassing for your business, but it will also tarnish your online reputation

Reach Out to Your Customers

This may sound like common sense, but the best way to get positive reviews is by reaching out to your customers and asking them for feedback.  Equip them with links to a couple of specific sites and watch the magic begin.  It is just as important to be active in seeking reviews as it is in monitoring them.
