Facebook Contests Increase Likes & Website Traffic 

Running a social media contest is not only a fun way to engage with your current online brand advocates, but it is also an effective way of gaining new Facebook fans and furthermore increasing website traffic.  We recently teamed up with the Home Comfort Experts (HCE) team to put on a Facebook contest to remember! The end result of this contest left HCE with a 62% increase in Facebook Likes and more than 4x the website traffic via social referral.

Set Goals For Your Social Contest

First things first, in any social media contest it is important to define your goals, whether it is to reach into a new target market or increase website traffic.  Once you pick your goal, it is easy to pick your prize.  Home Comfort Experts had a goal of increasing their Facebook audience while simultaneously giving back to their community.  HCE wanted a family in their area to be able to enjoy their Christmas a bit more so they chose to give away a $100 Visa gift card. Prizes can be anything from a Visa gift card to one of the services that your company offers.

When Crafting The Contest, Keep Things Simple

The next step to crafting the perfect social contest is to decide what the nature of the contest will be. This could mean anything from requiring entrants to simply submit photos or making the entry process more involved by asking them to leave a short story.  Home Comfort Experts asked for their Facebook fans to upload a photo of their most festive holiday decorations. When it comes to running social contests, Lure Creative recommends keeping the contest as simple as possible.  When you do this more people want to participate.

Social Contests Create Viral Content

It is important to remember that the reason social contests work is because they are innately “social”.  They are fun for the user and have a tendency to spread throughout Facebook. For the first two weeks of the HCE contest, Facebook fans entered their photo. After that, five finalists were chosen. The second two weeks of the contest involved the finalists recruiting their Facebook friends to come to HCE’s page and vote for their photo. The photo with the most votes at the end of two weeks was the winner. The catch? In order for their vote to count they had to also like Home Comfort’s Facebook page.  This is a key component to gaining Facebook likes as well as increasing brand awareness.

At the end of the day, Home Comfort Experts achieved their goal and all the while added some spice to their social media marketing.
