Why Working at Lure Creative Digital Marketing During Pride Month Means So Much to Me

By Kathryn Nichols, Director of Marketing, Lure Creative

June is Pride Month.

For many people, Pride is represented by rainbow flags, parades, and celebrations. While those things matter, Pride means something deeper to me.

It means being able to show up as yourself.

As a 42-year-old woman, mother, marketing professional, and openly lesbian Director of Marketing at Lure Creative, I understand firsthand how important it is to feel safe, seen, and valued in the workplace.

What makes this year’s Pride Month especially meaningful is that I work for a company that truly embraces diversity, not because it’s trendy, not because it’s good marketing, but because it’s part of who they are.

That company is Lure Creative Digital Marketing.

Pride Is About More Than Rainbows

Pride is about celebrating diversity.

It’s about honoring the people who came before us and fought for the right to live openly.

It’s about creating spaces where people feel safe, respected, and valued for who they are.

For me, Pride is also about recognizing how far we’ve come while acknowledging there is still work to do.

Throughout my career, I’ve experienced situations that reminded me not every workplace values people equally.

I’ve been told to “tone it down.”

I’ve been told being openly gay could limit career opportunities.

I’ve walked into interviews wondering if I was being judged for my experience or for stereotypes people created before I even spoke.

Imagine that.

Not discussing my skills.

Not discussing my marketing experience.

Not discussing my leadership abilities.

Discussing whether people were comfortable with who I am.

Experiences like those teach you something important: know your worth.

Your value is not determined by someone else’s bias.

Your talent, character, experience, and work ethic matter.

That’s why working at Lure Creative feels different.

Lure Creative Digital Marketing, A Workplace Built on Respect

At Lure Creative, our owners, Brandi and Brian Jonasson, have created something special.

They hire people based on character, talent, experience, and the value they bring to clients.

They understand that diverse perspectives make businesses stronger.

They understand that different backgrounds create better ideas.

Most importantly, they understand that people perform their best when they can be themselves.

Our office openly displays that we are a safe place.

That may seem like a small gesture to some people.

To others, it means everything.

Sometimes a sticker on a door tells someone they are welcome before a single conversation ever happens.

It sends a message that they can walk through that door without hiding who they are.

That matters.

Lure Creative: Diversity Makes Better Marketing

As Director of Marketing, I work with healthcare organizations, home service companies, skilled trades businesses, and local service providers every day.

One thing I’ve learned is that successful marketing starts with understanding people.

And people are different.

Different backgrounds.

Different experiences.

Different cultures.

Different needs.

Different stories.

The more perspectives we have around the table, the better we become at helping our clients connect with the people they serve.

Diversity isn’t just good for workplace culture.

It’s good for business.

When a marketing agency includes people with different life experiences, it creates stronger content strategies, better messaging, more authentic storytelling, and more effective campaigns.

It helps businesses connect with audiences they may otherwise overlook.

It helps brands communicate with empathy.

And empathy is one of the most powerful tools in marketing.

The Connection Between Pride and Local Search

Many people don’t realize how closely Pride and digital marketing intersect.

Today, consumers research everything online.

Before choosing a healthcare provider, a plumber, an HVAC company, an electrician, or even a local marketing agency, like Lure Creative here in Lenexa, KS – people go online and search.

They read online reviews.

They visit websites.

They explore social media.

They look at Google Business Profiles.- take ours for example.

People these days more than ever are looking for expertise, trust, and alignment with their values.

Brand Identity Reputation Optimization Lure Creative Google Business Profiles

Features on your Google My Business profile for example like women-owned business attributes, LGBTQ+ friendly designations, accessibility information, and community involvement can help customers better understand who a business is before they ever make contact.

These aren’t marketing gimmicks.

They’re facts.

And people use those facts every day when deciding who they want to do business with.

Businesses that openly communicate who they are often attract customers who appreciate those values.

That’s part of brand identity.

And brand identity is one of the foundations of successful marketing.

Authenticity Builds Stronger Brands: SEO Tips for Kansas City & Surrounding Businesses

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is that authenticity wins.

Businesses grow when they stop trying to be everything to everyone and start becoming experts in who they are.

The same principle applies to people.

When businesses embrace their values, they attract the right customers.

When employees can be themselves, they do their best work.

When leaders create safe environments, innovation grows.

When brands communicate honestly, trust follows.

Authenticity isn’t just a marketing strategy.

It’s a leadership strategy.

It’s a workplace strategy.

It’s a life strategy.

Social Media Tip: How Consumers Respond to Authentic Branding in Today’s Digital World

In today’s digital world, audiences are more aware than ever of how brands show up during Pride Month and other cultural moments. Many consumers, especially within the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, can quickly recognize the difference between authentic support and performative marketing.

Social media platforms such as TikTok and others have amplified these conversations, allowing people to openly share real experiences with brands in real time.

This visibility has created both opportunity and accountability for businesses.

When brands are consistent in their values and genuinely invest in inclusion, community support, and representation, it builds trust and long-term loyalty. When messaging feels performative or disconnected from actual company culture, audiences are quick to notice, and respond accordingly.

Today, especially for local businesses, authenticity directly influences brand reputation, customer trust, and overall business growth.

Why Authenticity and Inclusion Matter for Kansas City Businesses in Local Search

Every June, you’ll see companies changing logos and posting rainbow graphics.

Some genuinely support the LGBTQ+ community.

Others simply participate because it’s expected.

People can usually tell the difference.

Real support happens throughout the year.

It happens when companies create safe workplaces.

It happens when leaders support their employees.

It happens when diversity is reflected in hiring practices.

It happens when businesses stand by their values even when it’s uncomfortable.

That’s what makes Lure Creative special.

The support doesn’t start in June and end in July.

It’s part of our culture.

It’s visible every day.

Finding a Workplace Where You Can Be Yourself

If there’s one message I hope people take away from this article, it’s this:

You deserve to work somewhere you can be yourself.

You deserve to work somewhere you’re valued for your character, skills, and contributions.

You deserve to feel safe.

You deserve respect.

For years, I focused on proving my abilities.

Today, I have the privilege of working for a company that recognizes those abilities without asking me to hide parts of who I am.

As a marketing professional, that’s empowering.

As a leader, that’s inspiring.

As a mother, that’s the example I want future generations to see.

And as someone celebrating Pride Month, it’s something I’m incredibly grateful for.

Thank you, Brandi and Brian, for creating a workplace where people are encouraged to be themselves, continue learning, grow professionally, and contribute their unique perspectives.

That’s not just good leadership.

That’s good humanity.

And that’s something worth celebrating this Pride Month.

Happy Pride Month, Kansas City

June is a time to celebrate diversity, community, and the freedom to be yourself. Whether you’re attending local events, supporting LGBTQ+ owned businesses, spending time with friends and family, or participating in Pride festivities throughout the Kansas City area, I hope you have an incredible month.
